Los Pelones strike again in Riviera Maya

19 year old survives savage revenge attack in tourist town

Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo -
A 19 year old woman who worked as a prostitute in this Caribbean coastal resort narrowly survived a brutal knife attack Saturday afternoon (Mar. 31). She told police her assailants were four members of Los Pelones, a local drug trafficking and murder-for-hire gang which often clashes with the powerful Los Zetas organization. The woman is in critical condition after her throat was cut, leaving her unable to speak. But she managed to identify several men who were arrested a few hours later.

Los Pelones have carried out several brutal executions in Playa del Carmen this year. A former leader of the group who was arrested last December claims to have murdered 30 people in nearby Cancún in 2011.

The woman had passed along information about the gang to Playa police, according to a local press account. Saturday afternoon four men stopped by a hotel she worked out of and told her they wanted to hire her. She left with them in a Hummer, and they took her to another location where she was attacked. The woman's throat was cut so deeply that the trachea was visible, authorities sad.

The men left the victim for dead in a remote area. But a workman in the vicinity found her and summoned help. Although the woman was unable to speak, she wrote notes in route to the hospital. "I ratted on them (Los Pelones), and they wanted to kill me, please contact my boyfriend," a note said. Authorities did not reveal what she may have told them about the Pelones, or why. A sharp instrument or box cutter used in the attack was found about a kilometer away, apparently tossed out by the assailants, police said.

The woman was near death from massive blood loss when she arrived at the hospital but emergency surgery saved her life, according to a news source. The four suspects taken into custody are 25, 32, 40 and 57.
